ATHLETE'S CODE OF HONOR:
I promise upon my word of honor that I will not take unfair advantage of an opponent, that I will be courteous in word and demeanor to opponents, officials, and spectators, that I will observe the rules of the game in spirit as well as in letter, and that I will constantly strive to uphold the ethics of amateur sports.

Players Code of Conduct

All members of the American Scholastic Inline Hockey Championships and all invitees, including spectators, shall abide by the following code of conduct. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary measures, including suspension and/or expulsion, being imposed by the Rules and Infractions Committee of the ASIHC State leagues.

  1. Win or lose, players shall congratulate their team-mates and coaches as well as the players and coaches of the opposing team in a genuine and positive manner. Derogatory comments are absolutely forbidden.

  2. The referees are in charge of the game. Only the captains and alternate captains of the team shall address the referees and then shall do so only in a civil tone. Use of foul or abusive language is absolutely prohibited. While explanations of a referee's call may be legitimately sought, questioning the referee's judgment is forbidden. Accept the call and get on with the game.

  3. Spectators shall provide only a positive encouragement for the players, coaches, and referees. Derogatory comments aimed at any player, coach, or referee from a spectator shall be addressed with a strong warning on the first offence at any game. Upon the commission of a second offence by the same spectator, that spectator shall be removed form the Arena and forbidden re-entrance during the game and spectator's identity shall be properly noted. Should any spectator be removed from any three games, that spectator's removal shall be accompanied by a (one-month) ban from attendance at any games held in Colorado . Upon a fifth offence, that spectator shall be banned for the balance of the season.

  4. The coaching staff shall lead by example and shall adhere in all respects to this code of conduct. In addition, coaching staff shall address their own players the referees and the coaching staff of the other team only in a civilized and respectful tone. Coaching staff of the team may not address the players of the opposing team except to provide positive encouragement or congratulations. Discouraging or humiliating remarks, gestures or other communications to players, referees and the opposing team shall be absolutely forbidden. In addition, coaching staff shall at all times, both in practices and games, treat their own players with respect and dignity. Humiliation, belittlement and embarrassment through words, actions or conduct are inappropriate forms of punishment and ineffective instructional methods and shall be absolutely prohibited.

  5. Each child is entitled to the benefit of constructive criticism and instruction in order to develop his or her skills to their maximum potential. Coaching staff must carry out performance appraisals in an impartial and objective way based solely on an evaluation of technical skills, play, leadership, sportsmanship and the adherence of the children to the core values of the League. Favoritism, actual and perceived, must be always avoided.

  6. No player shall use performance enhancing drugs or other substances from time to time listed on the banned or prohibited substances list prepared by the International Olympic Committee and no member of the coaching staff purchase, sell, supply, administer or otherwise participate in the use by any player of any performance enhancing drugs or such banned substances. Any player or coach in breach of this rule shall, on a first offence, be banned from participation in hockey programs of the ASIHC for a period of one year and upon a second offence shall be banned for life from participation in the high school and middle school inline hockey programs of the ASIHC.

  7. Play hard but play fair. Inline hockey by its nature is a physically tough game; it shall be played with maximum effort in a sportsmanlike manner within the ASIHC rules endorsed by USA Roller Sports and the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union). Players shall not set out to intentionally maim or injure another player and the coaching staff, by their actions, words, conduct or inaction, shall not encourage or endorse such behavior.

  8. Players and coaches alike shall participate in the game of inline hockey with honesty and integrity. Any player who intentionally participates in any conduct which results in the intentional violation of the ASIHC rules of eligibility or otherwise intentionally circumvents the rules of eligibility shall be subject to an immediate one year suspension from participation in all scholastic inline hockey programs run by the ASIHC. Any person committing a second offence shall be subject to a lifetime suspension from participation in the inline hockey programs of the ASIHC.

  9. The coaching staff shall at all times honor the Players Code Of Conduct and ensure that these rights are upheld and afforded to each and every student participating in the ASIHC programs.

  10. Each member of the coaching staff shall have a positive obligation to expeditiously report to the League Director any instance of a breach of the rights of any player of which he/she has specific knowledge or which he/she has reasonable grounds for believing has occurred.

  11. The coaching staff shall strictly adhere to the policies and procedures for coaching staff established from time to time by the ASIHC.
Harassment and Abuse

When a young person is harassed or abused by another player or adult occupying a position of trust, the impact can be devastating. A major hurdle to healing the wounds that inevitable result is non-disclosure: in order to recover, victims must be heard and believed. Harassment is understood as encompassing a very broad range of prohibited behavior, including discriminatory conduct, physical and sexual harassment, emotional, mental, physical and sexual abuse.

ASIHC Hockey believes that any scholastic inline hockey player should have the ability to discuss any concerns that might be classified as harassment. ASIHC Hockey also believes that false allegations can be devastating to a person's career and personal life.

In view of the incidents of harassment that have affected the sport of inline hockey, we believe that there is a need for a concerned player, to be able to talk in private and confidentially with our organization. We do not encourage minor or frivolous concerns which may result from frustration or anger to be reported or acted upon, however, we are available to talk to your request.

Responsibility To The Game

  1. Coaches are role models. As such, they shall always conduct themselves so as to maintain the highest principles, integrity, and dignity of The Game.

  2. Coaches are responsible for knowing, understanding, and following all rules of the game as established and directed by the American Scholastic Inline Hockey Championships, the respective High School Inline Hockey League, and the conference in which the coach participates.

  3. Dissatisfaction with ASIHC or conference policies and/or their implementation may only be addressed through the proper channels established by the ASIHC or respective conference. It is never proper to express dissatisfaction through the media or any other source.

  4. Both the letter and the spirit of all rules must be adhered to by the coaches.

  5. It is the coach's responsibility to make sure that all players understand the rules, their spirit, and the only legitimate processes by which to affect change. The letter and spirit of all rules must be adhered to by all participants in The Game.
Game officials - like coaches and players - are major participants in The Game. The coach shall neither exhibit nor tolerate any behavior from others (staff and squad) - verbal or otherwise - that might reflect poorly on an on-court official. This includes, but is not limited to, arguing a judgment call in such a manner as to incite players and spectators against an official. There are approved methods by which a coach may comment on an official's performance. Public displays of displeasure - before, during, or after a contest - are not among these approved methods.

COACH/VOLUNTEER CODE OF HONOR:
I promise upon my word of honor to help create an environment in which primary emphasis is placed upon the emotional and physical well-being of all AAU athletes, rather than winning. I will lead by example, and will demonstrate the value of fair play and sportsmanship to all participants. Lastly, by becoming an AAU member, I agree to be bound by the AAU Code as well as AAU operating procedures and policies.

Responsibility to the Institution

  1. Coaches are educators. The rink serves as classroom, practices provide skills, and competition allows for the pursuit of excellence. This primary function of the coach must never be disregarded.

  2. Coaches should never interfere with the duties and jurisdiction of other departments of an institution, including but not limited to admissions, compliance, and the various academic disciplines.

  3. Coaches should constantly be alert to see that their program is being conducted and promoted properly. While there are definable duties in which coaches hold primary responsibility, coaches are also responsible for having an awareness of all institutional activities that may affect their program's performance and reputation.

  4. Coaches should immediately notify their league director of any situation that might violate the Code of Ethics or any ASIHC or conference rule or regulation.

Responsibility to the Student-Athlete

  1. Coaches should never place the value of a win above the objective of instilling the highest ideals and character traits in their players. The safety and welfare of the players should always be uppermost in their mind and these values must never be sacrificed for personal prestige or personal gain.

  2. Coaches should never teach their players tactics or skills designed to circumvent the intent of the rule book and the standards of fair play. The rules exist to protect the players and provide a common standard by which final results will be determined. Coaches should not attempt to "beat the rules" or take any unfair advantage over an opponent.

  3. Whenever players exhibit unsportsmanlike behavior on their own, it is the responsibility of the coach to address that behavior and put an end to it. Coaches are responsible for the conduct of their players.

  4. The diagnosis and treatment of injuries is a medical problem and coaches should always defer to the proper medical authorities without the slightest interference.

  5. Coaches, in consultation with the proper athletic department administrator, are responsible for knowing and following the ASIHC League Rules, and the USA Roller Sports Inline Hockey Rules book. Coaches should not knowingly jeopardize the eligibility and participation of any student-athlete due to ignorance of the rules and their application.

  6. Coaches should not make any demands on a student-athlete that are inconsistent with ASIHC guidelines and regulations or in any way compromise the student-athlete's academic pursuits.

  7. It shall be understood by coaches that their general responsibility to "the student-athlete" and to "The Game" includes all student-athletes, whether on his team or on an opponent's.

Responsibility To Officials

  1. All game officials - including but not limited to on-court officials, goal judges, scorers, host facility personnel - shall at all times be treated in a professional and courteous manner.

  2. In particular, on-court officials should be treated with respect at all times and it is the particular responsibility of the host coach to insure for the safety and well-being of these officials in that host facility.

  3. Coaches should be sensitive to the impropriety of private meetings with on-court officials before, during, or after the contest, without the presence of a representative of the opposing team.

  4. Coaches wishing to express displeasure with an official's conduct must follow the proper procedure as established by the ASIHC (via the League Referee In Chief, League Director, etc.).

  5. At no time is it appropriate to use the media as a vehicle in which to criticize an official, officials in general, or any ASIHC or conference committee or its policies. Not only are specific or general criticisms through the media inappropriate, so too are emphatic "No Comment" remarks, or disguised criticisms ("My athletic director told me not to comment on the officiating.")

Public Relations

  1. Members of the news media shall be treated with courtesy, honesty, and respect. Such treatment extends to members of the high school sports information community as well. Derogatory and misleading statements must be avoided. Direct questions should be answered honestly or not at all.

  2. Coaches should take the time to instruct and guide students in their responsibility to the media as well (see attached material from the U.S. Olympic Committee). Coaches and athletes should refrain from negative comments about opponents or officials at all times.

  3. Coaches should respect policies and procedures established on their community high school campus and by the institution's sports information office. Coaches should see that all commitments made by players or staff regarding interviews or photo sessions be honored. Coaches shall also respect the policies established by the sports information office for the press box, home and away. The press box is a work area. The League Director will determine policies for assistant coaches, statisticians, non-dressed players, and professional scouts. It is expected that all coaches will abide by these policies.

  4. Coaches should be available to the media following a brief post-game cooling off period. The coach should consult with the League Director regarding post-game policies for athletes. The policies that are established must give all members of the media equal access to designated participants.

I certify that I have never been convicted of any sex offense nor felony; or, if so, I must apply for membership (and receive approval) through the AAU National Office.
